In short
How heating engineers can use Google Ads to catch winter breakdowns, win boiler replacements and fill the quieter months with servicing.
The best way for a heating engineer to win more boiler work from Google Ads is to treat repairs, replacements and servicing as three separate jobs, each with its own campaign, budget and landing page. Breakdown ads need to be ready for the first cold snap, replacement ads need patience and proof, and servicing ads fill the summer. Set up that way, your advertising follows the year instead of fighting it.
Here's how that works in practice, and what to get right before the weather turns.
Why does heating work come in waves?
Because it follows the weather. A boiler can go months doing little more than heating water, and a fault that went unnoticed all summer shows itself the first time the boiler has to heat the house again. A seized pump, a pressure drop, a fault code nobody understands: they surface in the same cold weeks, and every heating engineer's phone rings at once.
Then spring arrives and the urgent calls drop away, and a diary that was full in January can have gaps by June. Google's own guidance on costs says seasonal peaks affect search demand, "which in turn affects your Google Ads cost." In a heating account, that peak comes when it's cold: more searches, more competitors and higher prices.
That pattern is the whole reason to split your campaigns. If everything runs from one budget, the busy weeks swallow it and the quiet weeks get nothing.
How should you advertise breakdown repairs?
Think about who's searching. Someone with no heating and a cold house isn't comparing ten websites. They're on their phone looking for someone local who can come out soon, and the engineer who looks trustworthy, covers their street and is easy to call gets the job.
So breakdown ads need to make calling easy. That means a call button, a clear mention of the areas you cover and ads that only show during the hours you're picking up. There's little point paying for a click at 10pm if it goes to voicemail and the customer rings someone else.
Budget is the other lever. When a cold spell is forecast, give repair campaigns room to spend more. When you're fully booked for a week, turn them down. The aim is to pay only for calls you can actually take.
How do you win more boiler replacements?
A new boiler is a big purchase, so nobody rushes it. People read up on combis and system boilers, compare warranties, look at finance and get quotes. That's a very different frame of mind from someone sitting in a cold kitchen, and it needs a different page.
So a replacement campaign shouldn't send people where your breakdown ads do. Its page should walk through how you price a new boiler, show photos of installs you've finished nearby and make booking a survey simple. If you offer fixed prices, finance or extended manufacturer warranties, say so clearly, as long as it's true. A page built for that decision gives people what they need to book a survey, which a general homepage doesn't.
Timing matters here too. A breakdown is one of the moments a replacement gets decided, when an engineer tells someone their old boiler isn't worth patching up again. If your replacement campaign is already running when that happens, you're in the running for the bigger job.
How can you fill the quieter months?
This is where Google Ads can change the shape of your year. Annual servicing is easy for homeowners to forget, and a well-timed ad in late spring or summer brings it to mind. A customer whose boiler you've serviced already has your number when something goes wrong in January.
Landlords are an even steadier source. GOV.UK's private renting guidance for England, checked in October 2026, says landlords must "have a registered engineer do an annual gas safety check on each appliance and flue", and give their tenants a copy of the record. Those checks come round every year whatever the weather, which makes landlords and letting agents a useful group to reach when the breakdown calls slow down.
Servicing and landlord checks each deserve their own campaign. They attract different people, suit different ads and lead to different follow-up work.
What makes someone pick you?
With gas, people want proof before they open the door. Being on the Gas Safe Register is the starting point, and reviews from nearby streets, photos of recent installs and any manufacturer warranties you can offer all help someone choose you over the engineer listed below you.
Google lets advertisers add extra lines of text and links beneath an ad, which is the natural home for anything genuinely true about your business. Put the same details beside the phone number on your landing page, so the reassurance doesn't stop after the click.
Keep your budget away from people who will never book, too. Job hunters, people looking for training courses and homeowners after a how-to video will all click a heating ad if you let them, so add those searches as negative keywords from day one.
How much should a heating engineer spend?
It depends on two things: how many engineers are bidding in your area and which jobs you want. Google's 2026 guide to costs says there's "no fixed price tag", and that areas with higher demand or more competitors "will generally see higher costs." A sole trader in a small town and a firm covering a whole city need very different budgets.
The more useful question is what each type of job is worth to you. A new boiler is worth far more than a service, so you can afford to pay more for a replacement enquiry. A service is worth less on the day, but it can lead to repairs and, eventually, a replacement. Work out what you can afford to pay for each, and you have a sensible place to start.
Our management fee starts at £600 a month + VAT, with ad spend paid directly to Google, and every campaign starts with a free audit of your area. You can see how we set this up on our heating engineers page, and the approach has a lot in common with our work for plumbers.
Frequently asked questions
When should heating engineers start their winter ads?
In early autumn, before the first cold snap. That gives the campaign time to gather data before demand peaks.
Should I advertise boiler servicing in the summer?
Yes. It's the quietest time for breakdowns, and servicing campaigns keep your diary full while bringing in customers who'll ring you again in winter.
Do I need a website to run Google Ads?
For search ads, yes. Google removed the option to create new call ads in February 2026 and now points advertisers to call assets on responsive search ads, which send people to a page on your site. That page should show your reviews, photos and Gas Safe details, because that's what people check before they book a survey, and the DLR Growth Engine includes a free custom website on its 12-month plan.
