How much does a job from Google Ads cost a plumber?

How much does a job from Google Ads cost a plumber?

In short

Work out what each booked plumbing job costs you from Google Ads, which jobs carry the margin to pay for clicks, and how to bring the cost down.

A job from Google Ads costs a plumber the price of the clicks divided by the jobs those clicks turn into. You work it out from four numbers: what you pay per click, how many clicks become calls or enquiries, how many of those enquiries you book, and what each job leaves you once it's done. Know that figure for each type of work and you know exactly which jobs are worth advertising for.

Google doesn't publish a set price for a plumbing click. What you pay depends on how many plumbers are bidding in your postcodes, so a figure from someone else's area tells you nothing about yours. Here's how to work out your own, which jobs can carry it, and how to bring it down.

How do you work out what a booked job costs?

You need four numbers:

  • Cost per click, which Google Ads shows you for every campaign
  • Enquiry rate, the share of clicks that turn into a call or a form
  • Booking rate, the share of enquiries you turn into work
  • Margin, what the job leaves you after parts and time.

Divide your cost per click by your enquiry rate and you have your cost per enquiry. Divide that by your booking rate and you have your cost per booked job.

Here's the arithmetic with made-up numbers, purely to show how it fits together. These are not real prices. Say a click costs £5 and one click in eight turns into a call or form, each enquiry costs you £40. Book one enquiry in two, and each booked job costs you £80. None of those figures is what clicks cost in your area. They're there to show that two of the four numbers have nothing to do with Google's prices and everything to do with your campaign and your phone.

That's the useful part. You can't set the price of a click, but you can stop paying for clicks that were never going to ring, and you can answer more of the calls you've paid for. Both bring the cost of a job down without spending a penny more.

Which plumbing jobs can pay for the clicks?

Set your cost per booked job against the margin on each type of work, and the answer becomes obvious. Stay with the hypothetical £80 and add two made-up margins. If a dripping tap left you £60 after parts and time, every one you won through Google would lose you money on the day. If a bathroom refit left you £1,500, the same £80 would be a small cost of winning it.

Emergency work earns its place through the booking rate. A burst pipe or a leak needs a plumber today, so when you answer and can get there, the call turns into a job. Even if those clicks cost more than others, a high booking rate keeps the cost per job in check, as long as the phone is picked up.

Boiler work is a different sum. If you're Gas Safe registered and fit boilers, a replacement carries a big margin, but it's a planned purchase and you're one of the quotes. Fewer enquiries turn into work, so the cost per booked job rises, and the margin is what pays for it.

Bathrooms and kitchens are the biggest jobs and the slowest decisions. People compare quotes and look at finished work before they book, so your booking rate depends on how well your website shows what you've done. That's why the page behind a bathroom ad matters as much as the ad, and why our web design for plumbers puts your finished jobs and reviews where people can see them.

Small fixes are the jobs to keep out of your ads. When the margin on a job is smaller than what it costs you to book one, every job Google brings in is a loss, so those searches belong on your negative keyword list.

How do you see your real cost per job?

You need conversion tracking, set up before the first click. Without it, Google Ads can show you clicks and spend, but not which of them turned into a phone call.

Calls need the most care, because that's how plumbing customers get in touch. Google's help documentation on tracking calls from your website, checked in October 2026, says this kind of tracking "tracks a call as a conversion when it lasts longer than a minimum length that you set." A wrong number or a ten-second hang-up shouldn't count as an enquiry, or your cost per enquiry looks better than it is.

We set up call and form conversion tracking before launch, with each type of job in its own campaign so the costs don't blur together. The last step is yours, because Google can't see your diary. Keep a simple note of which enquiries you booked and what type of job each one was. Set that against each campaign's spend once a month and you have a real cost per booked job for call-outs, boilers and bathrooms, rather than a guess.

How do you bring the cost per job down?

There are three levers, and none of them needs a bigger budget.

The first is the searches you pay for. Every click from someone looking for a part, a DIY guide or work you don't do pushes your cost per job up, because it can never turn into a booking. Our negative keyword list goes in before your campaign spends anything, and the searches people actually typed get checked daily, with any new time-wasters blocked.

The second is your hours. A call that goes to voicemail costs you the click and the job, because the customer rings the next plumber on the page. Schedule urgent ads for the hours someone answers, and you stop paying for calls you can't take.

The third is your area. Google's help page on advanced location options, checked in October 2026, explains that the default setting, Presence or interest, also reaches people who have shown interest in your area, not just people in it. The alternative, Presence, shows ads to "people who are likely to be located or regularly located in the locations you've targeted." For a plumber who can only travel so far, that difference is real money. We set your locations to the postcodes you cover and leave out the places you don't go.

Do Local Services Ads cost less per job?

They change what you pay for, not the sum. Plumbing is one of the home services eligible for them, and Google's UK page for Local Services Ads, checked in October 2026, says you "Only pay when potential customers get in touch through your ads on Local Services Ads." So the price is set per enquiry instead of per click.

The cost per booked job still comes down to your booking rate. Divide what you pay per enquiry by the share you book, and compare the answer with what you get from search ads. Our article on getting more plumbing jobs from Google Ads covers how the two differ in control.

What does it cost to have us run your ads?

Our Google Ads management starts at £600 a month + VAT, with Growth at £1,000 a month + VAT and Scale at £1,800 a month + VAT. Every plan runs on a 6-month minimum, the clicks are billed to you by Google rather than through us, and once your free audit is done, campaigns are live in 5 days on average. The full plans are on our Google Ads page, and Google Ads for plumbers sets out how we run call-outs, boiler work and bathrooms as separate campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good cost per job for a plumber?

One that leaves you profit on that type of work. Compare your cost per booked job with the margin on each job type, and move budget to where the gap is widest.

Why are my clicks cheap but my jobs expensive?

Because the clicks aren't turning into bookings. Check the search terms you're paying for, the hours your ads run and the page people land on before you touch your bids.

Should short calls count as enquiries?

No. Set a minimum call length in your call conversion tracking, so wrong numbers and quick hang-ups don't make your cost per enquiry look lower than it is.

Can I advertise only for the jobs I want?

Yes. Give each type of job its own campaign, keywords and budget, and turn down the work you don't want without touching the rest.
