SEO for plumbers: how do you win more local jobs on Google?

In short

How plumbers win more local jobs from Google: a service-area profile, a page per job and town, Gas Safe and WaterSafe on show, and reviews.

If you're a plumber, SEO wins you more local jobs from Google by making you the obvious choice in three places: the map listing for the towns you actually drive to, a page on your website for each job you want more of, and proof that you're qualified and trusted. None of it is paid per click, and each part strengthens the others.

Here's what each part looks like for a plumbing business.

Can a plumber who works from home appear in Google's map?

Yes, as a service-area business. You go to your customers rather than them coming to you, and Google has a type of Business Profile for exactly that. Its help page on managing service areas, checked in October 2026, says a business that doesn't serve customers at its address should remove that address from the profile.

In its place you list the areas you cover. Google lets you set "up to 20 service areas based on the cities, postcodes or other areas that you serve", and it won't accept a radius drawn from your base. So pick the towns and postcodes you'll genuinely reach for a leak at teatime, not every place you'd travel to for a well-paid refit.

Service areas tell Google where you work. They don't put you at the top of the map in every one of them. Google's local ranking guidance names three factors, relevance, distance and prominence, and distance is measured from the customer who's searching. In the towns furthest from your base, your website and your reviews have to do more of the work.

What does a customer with a leak look at before ringing?

Your map listing. An emergency job is won or lost there, because everything the customer needs to choose is on it: whether you're open now, a star rating they believe, a phone number and photos that show a real van and real jobs.

So the profile is where emergency SEO happens. Keep your hours exact, bank holidays included, and offer emergency call-outs only for the hours someone answers the phone, because advertising cover you can't give turns an enquiry into a complaint. Your primary category should be the work that earns you most, with every service listed underneath it, from leaks and burst pipes to blocked toilets, so Google can match you to what people type.

What does someone planning a new bathroom look at?

Your website, carefully. A bathroom, a full repipe or a new unvented cylinder is planned spending, and the customer has time to compare. They want to see similar jobs you've finished, understand how you price, check your accreditations and read what other customers said. A homepage promising "all aspects of plumbing" gives them none of that.

Planned work needs pages of its own. A bathroom installation page with photos of rooms you've fitted, a plain account of how a fit runs from strip-out to sealant, and reviews from bathroom customers is a strong match for that search and a convincing read.

Which pages does a plumbing website need for local SEO?

One for each job you want more of, and one for each town where you want work. For a plumber, the job pages start with:

  • Emergency plumbing and leak repairs
  • Bathroom and shower installations
  • Blocked drains and toilets, if you take them on
  • Boiler and gas appliance work, only if you're Gas Safe registered
  • Landlord and letting agent work, if you want it.

Town pages earn their place when they say something true about that town: the jobs you've done there, how quickly you reach it and reviews from customers who live there. A page with only the place name swapped tells the customer nothing new and gives Google nothing to tell it apart.

Every job page needs your number at the top, a short enquiry form and a link to the areas you cover. If your current site can't do that, our web design for plumbers builds it in from the start.

Which accreditations should a plumber show online?

The ones you hold, named exactly as the scheme names them, with a way for the customer to check. For plumbers, two stand out.

The Gas Safe Register's own guidance on the Gas Safe ID card, checked in October 2026, states that "by law all gas engineers must be Gas Safe registered if they are working in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey." Each registered engineer has a unique licence number, and the back of the card lists the categories of work they're qualified for. If you do gas work, put your licence number on your gas pages and describe only the work your card covers.

For water work, the WaterSafe Register is the national accreditation body for plumbers, and its 2026 site explains that approved plumbers "provide a Certificate of Compliance, proving that their work meets legal requirements." If you're approved through one of its schemes, name it on your bathroom and repair pages and tell the customer the certificate comes with the job.

How do reviews turn finished jobs into more work?

They add up, one job at a time. Reviews feed prominence, the part of Google's local ranking that measures how well known you are, and Google's guidance on improving your local ranking, checked in October 2026, says replying to them shows customers you value their feedback. The same page rules out buying a better local ranking, so reviews are something only good work and a steady habit of asking can build.

Ask as you pack up, when the water's back on or the bathroom is finished, and send a direct link so it takes them seconds. Then reply to every review and quote the best ones on the page for that job.

How long does SEO take to bring in plumbing jobs?

It depends on three things: how many plumbers already rank well in your towns, how much your profile and site need fixing, and how many jobs and towns you want to rank for. A plumber with a sound profile in a quiet market moves faster than one rebuilding a site in a crowded city.

You don't have to wait for it, though. Google Ads for plumbers puts you at the top of the page for the jobs you choose while your rankings grow, and once you rank for a job you can spend less on ads for it.

Frequently asked questions

Should a plumber show their home address on Google?

No. If customers don't come to your address, Google says to remove it from your profile, and you set service areas instead.

How many areas can a plumber cover on a Google Business Profile?

Up to 20. Google lets you set them by city, postcode or other area, but not as a radius from your base.

Do I need a separate page for each plumbing service?

Yes, for every job you want more of. A page about bathroom installations matches that search far better than a general services page, and it gives the customer what they need to ask for a quote.

Should I put my Gas Safe number on my website?

Yes, if you do gas work. Show your licence number on your gas pages and describe only the work your card covers, so a customer can check you before they ring.
