In short
Google Ads in Canada: your own budget, plus GST/HST (and QST in Quebec) on Google's charges, plus any management fee. How each part works.
Google Ads in Canada costs the ad budget you set, plus the sales tax Google adds to its charges unless you've given it your registration number, plus a monthly fee if an agency manages the account. Clicks are priced by auction, so you control the spend rather than paying a list price. Our management plans are C$1,250, C$2,000 or C$3,500 a month, and Google bills your ad spend to you directly.
Tax and currency are where Canada differs from most markets, so we start there. After that come click prices, setting a budget and what management includes.
Does Google charge sales tax on Canadian ad spend?
Yes. Google's Ads Help page on taxes in your country (October 2026) states that "GST/HST tax applies to all Google Ads customers with billing address in Canada who have not added a GST/HST registration number to their payments profiles." Google doesn't print provincial rates on that page. It sends you to your local tax authority for the current GST/HST rate where you are.
Two practical points follow. The billing address on your account decides the tax, because Google says accounts served by Google Canada are taxed based on that address. And if you're registered, your number goes in the optional Tax Registration Number field in Google Ads, or to Google's support team if you pay by monthly invoicing. Recovering that tax is an accounting question for your accountant, and Google's own page is plain that it cannot provide tax advice.
What changes if your business is in Quebec?
A second tax comes into play. On the same page, Google gives the Quebec Sales Tax (QST) rate as 9.975% and says it applies to all Google Ads customers in the province who haven't added a QST registration number to their payments profiles. Adding it follows the GST/HST route: your payments profile on postpay, or Google's support team on monthly invoicing.
Quebec also shapes the competition you face. Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada's Key Small Business Statistics 2025 reports that more than half of Canada's small employer businesses are concentrated in Ontario and Quebec. Sell into either province and you're bidding where the country's largest pools of small businesses sit.
Which currency will your Google Ads account bill in?
The one you choose on the first day, for good. Google's Ads Help page on account settings says, "Your currency is permanently set when you set up your account," because it's used to determine how you're billed. Switching later means opening a new account.
Settle it before you create the account. Choose the currency your books are kept in, and your Google invoices, tax lines and reports will match your accounts without any conversion.
What sets the price of a click in Canada?
An auction that runs every time someone searches. Google's Ads Help definition of actual cost-per-click is "the final amount you're charged for a click." Your maximum bid sets the ceiling, and Google charges the amount needed to clear its Ad Rank thresholds and beat the advertiser ranked just below you. Automated bidding tools are the one exception that can take a click above your maximum bid.
So your competitors set your prices, not Google. The same ISED report counts 1.10 million employer businesses in Canada as of December 2024, and 1.08 million of them (98.2%) are small businesses. How many of those bid on your searches, in the provinces and cities you target, decides your cost per click. Our free audit pulls the click prices for your own search terms, and that's the figure to budget from.
How do you turn a monthly figure into a daily budget?
Google asks for an average daily budget but bills against a monthly cap. Its guide to managing your spend (October 2026) leaves the amount to you and defines the monthly charging limit as the average number of days in a month (30.4) multiplied by your average daily budget. A single day can run to double the daily figure, the month still stops at the limit, and anything over it comes back to you as an overdelivery credit.
Start with the monthly sum you can keep up for the full six months and divide it by 30.4. C$1,520 a month becomes a C$50 average daily budget. Then divide that monthly sum by your audited cost per click, and you know how many visits a month your budget buys before a single ad runs.
What do the C$1,250, C$2,000 and C$3,500 plans include?
Each is a monthly fee for our Google Ads management in Canada, billed separately from your clicks:
- Starter, C$1,250: up to 2 campaigns
- Growth, C$2,000: up to 5 campaigns, plus remarketing and A/B ad testing
- Scale, C$3,500: unlimited campaigns and dedicated landing page builds
All three carry a 6-month minimum term. The free audit comes before anything is built, campaigns go live in 5 days on average, and from then on we optimize daily. We set up call and form conversion tracking, so your monthly report shows the searches behind each inquiry. Your spend, and the tax on it, stays in your own Google account and on Google's invoices.
Can you hire a Google Ads team that isn't in Canada?
Yes, and the tax position above stays the same, because Google bills your account directly. DLR Media is remote-first, with no Canadian office. Our team has worked with clients across 15 markets, we schedule video calls inside your business hours, and your ads run on your time zone.
Our evidence comes from home. UK client Caltech Lifts, a stairlift company, turned our Google Ads campaigns into 35 qualified leads, 15 of which became sales. If you want more than search, our Growth Engine adds Meta Ads, SEO and GEO, with a free custom website worth C$9,000, for C$2,999 a month on a 12-month term.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I enter my GST/HST registration number?
In the optional Tax Registration Number field in Google Ads. Advertisers on monthly invoicing send it to Google's support team instead.
Can I change my account's currency later?
No. Google sets the currency permanently when the account is created, so a different currency means a new account.
Do Quebec businesses pay QST on Google Ads?
Yes, at 9.975%, unless a QST registration number is in the payments profile.
How soon can my campaigns start?
Once you've had your free audit and approved the plan, campaigns go live in 5 days on average.
