When is it worth upgrading from Shopify to Shopify Plus?

When is it worth upgrading from Shopify to Shopify Plus?

In short

Plus starts at £1,800 a month on a three-year term. Here's what it adds over Advanced, the signs it's time to upgrade, and when to stay put.

For most UK brands, Shopify Plus becomes worth it when one of three things is true: the card fee savings on Plus would cover most of the higher subscription, you need to sell to trade customers or into several markets properly, or your checkout and operations have outgrown what Advanced lets you change. If none of those apply yet, Advanced is usually the better place to be. Plus starts at £1,800 a month on a three-year term, so it needs to pay for itself.

What does Shopify Plus actually add over Advanced?

It's easy to assume Plus is just "more Shopify". Some of it is. But the parts that matter for a growing brand are quite specific, so check them against what you actually need.

Shopify's UK pricing page (checked October 2026) shows the practical differences. Advanced gives you up to 15 staff accounts and 10 inventory locations. Plus gives you unlimited staff accounts and 200 locations. Online card rates drop from 1.5% + 25p on Advanced to 1.3% + 25p on Plus, and the fee for using a third-party payment provider falls from 0.6% to 0.2%. The same page lists features "just for Plus", including high volume checkout, bot protection, up to 500% higher API call limits, custom user groups and up to 9 free expansion stores.

Checkout is the other big one. Shopify's help centre on checkout customisation (checked October 2026) says "Advanced checkout customization features are available only on the Shopify Plus plan." In practice that means apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps of checkout, plus access to the Checkout Branding API. On Advanced you can customise the thank you and order status pages and use the checkout editor, but the steps where people actually enter their details and pay stay largely as Shopify built them.

Shopify's Plus pricing page also lists B2B on Shopify, Shopify Functions, headless commerce, Shopify POS Pro and Shopify Markets among what's included.

How much does Shopify Plus cost in the UK?

According to Shopify's Plus pricing page (checked October 2026), Plus starts at £1,950 a month on a one-year term and £1,800 a month on a three-year term. Businesses with more complex structures can move to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model, and Shopify doesn't publish that figure. Additional stores beyond the main store and 9 expansion stores cost £250 a month each. Shopify doesn't charge for the move itself, but custom development, themes and third-party apps are extra.

Compare that with Advanced, which is £259 a month paid yearly or £344 a month paid monthly. So the jump in subscription alone is roughly £1,500 to £1,700 a month. That's the number your business case has to beat.

How do you know it's time to upgrade?

Start with your card fees, because it's the easiest sum to do. The 0.2 percentage point saving on online card payments works out at £2,000 for every £1 million you take online through Shopify Payments. At around £9 million a year in online card sales, that saving alone gets close to covering the higher subscription on the three-year rate. In our experience, most brands upgrade well before that, so the rest of the case usually comes from somewhere else.

That somewhere else tends to be one of these:

  • Trade customers. You're handling wholesale orders by email or a separate portal, with price lists in spreadsheets and someone keying orders in by hand.
  • New markets. You want a separate store or experience for Europe or the US, with its own currency, content or catalogue, and one store with a currency switcher isn't enough.
  • Checkout limits. You need to add delivery date pickers, custom fields or payment rules in the checkout itself, not just on the thank you page.
  • Operations. Your team has outgrown 15 staff accounts, you're running more than 10 locations, or your ERP and warehouse systems keep hitting API limits during busy periods.

If you recognise two or more of those, Plus is probably worth a serious look. A big flash sale or product drop is another trigger, because high volume checkout and bot protection matter most when thousands of people hit the site at once.

When isn't Plus worth it yet?

In our experience, plenty of brands upgrade because it feels like the next step, then find they're paying for features they never switch on. If your growth is coming from one market, you sell direct to consumers only, and your checkout works fine as it is, Advanced will do the job.

It's also worth being honest about where your problems really sit. A slow site, a weak product page or a messy collection structure won't be fixed by changing plan. Neither will a conversion rate that's dropped because of paid traffic quality. Those issues are usually cheaper to fix first, and fixing them makes the Plus case clearer if you get there later.

The contract matters too. Plus runs on a one-year or three-year term, so you're committing to at least £23,400 a year on the one-year rate before any build work. That's a decision to make with real numbers, not on a hunch.

What does an upgrade from Shopify to Shopify Plus involve?

The good news is that it's an upgrade, not a migration. Your products, customers, orders, URLs and theme stay where they are, so changing plan on its own doesn't touch the pages Google already knows about. But that doesn't mean nothing needs planning.

Checkout is usually where the work starts. If you're upgrading to customise it, someone has to design and build those checkout extensions, test them across devices and payment methods, and make sure they don't slow anything down. Apps need reviewing too. Some apps you pay for now duplicate things Plus already does, and some have Plus-only versions or pricing.

Markets and B2B take the most thinking. Adding expansion stores means deciding what's shared and what's separate: products, stock, pricing, content, translations and tax settings. Setting up B2B means creating company profiles, catalogues and price lists, and deciding how trade customers log in and pay. Then there are the integrations. If your ERP, CRM or warehouse system connects to Shopify, those connections need checking and often rebuilding to take advantage of higher API limits or new store structures.

None of that is unusual. It just needs a plan that fits around your trading calendar, so you're not changing checkout the week before Black Friday.

Where do we fit in?

We help UK brands work out whether Plus is right for them, then plan and build the upgrade. If you're not sure yet, our Shopify Plus readiness audit looks at your fees, checkout, apps, markets and integrations and tells you plainly whether the numbers stack up.

If you go ahead, you get a named project lead and the same designers and developers from audit to launch, working with you in a private Slack channel. Our Shopify Plus builds start from £50,000 + VAT, and Shopify Plus International projects, for brands setting up across several markets, start from £80,000 + VAT. If you're coming to Plus from another platform rather than from Shopify, our Plus Migration projects start from £65,000 + VAT and cover data and order migration, URL redirects and SEO protection, and post-launch monitoring. Our guide to moving from Magento to Shopify covers that route in more detail.

For one hospitality and wellness group, Shopify Plus became the central commerce layer for the whole business, with 50+ systems connected and manual processing cut by 80%. That's the kind of result that comes from planning the operations side, not just the shop front.

Frequently asked questions

Will upgrading to Shopify Plus affect my SEO?

Not on its own. Upgrading keeps your store, URLs and content in place. The SEO risk comes from bigger changes made at the same time, like a new theme or a new store structure for other markets, and those need planning like any migration.

Can I switch back to Advanced later?

Not partway through a contract, as a rule. Shopify's pricing page says Plus is sold on a one-year or three-year subscription that you can cancel when the term ends, so check your term before planning any change.

Can I sell to trade customers without Plus?

Yes, to a point, with wholesale apps or manual workarounds. B2B on Shopify, which Shopify lists as part of Plus, is the step up when you need company profiles, custom catalogues and per-company pricing in one place.

How long does an upgrade to Shopify Plus take?

It depends on what you're changing. A plan change on its own is quick, but checkout work, new markets, B2B and integrations all add time, so we agree a fixed timeline after discovery.
