Know what llms.txt does, and what it doesn't
llms.txt is a Markdown file proposed on llmstxt.org in September 2024 to help AI agents use a website. The only required part is a heading with your business name. After that comes a short summary and sections of links to the pages that matter.
Google is clear about where it fits. Its guidance on AI features says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. So llms.txt is a sensible extra once the basics work, not the thing that gets you recommended, and we'll tell you plainly where it sits on your list.
Fix the access that matters first
Before an AI tool can recommend you, it has to be able to read you. OpenAI says sites that opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, other than as navigational links, and that a robots.txt change takes about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Blocking GPTBot is a separate choice that covers model training.
We check your robots.txt, any CDN or hosting rule that turns crawlers away, and whether your key pages are indexed and allowed a snippet in Google, which Google requires before a page can be linked in AI Overviews. Those fixes come before any new file.
One set of facts, everywhere
Some website platforms and plugins now generate an llms.txt file automatically, and it's easy to publish one without reading it. A file built from old menus or draft pages hands AI tools a summary that doesn't match the business you run today.
We line up your llms.txt, schema, service pages and listings so your name, services, areas, prices and contact details match. We run the same set-up on our own site: dlrmedia.co.uk publishes an llms.txt and a fuller llms-full.txt, dated at the top and kept current.

Questions
Good to know.
DLR Media. Our AI and LLM technical readiness audit checks your llms.txt, schema and crawler access against your live pages, and Growth Engine clients get schema and AI crawler access handled as part of daily GEO.
No. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
OpenAI's crawler documentation doesn't say ChatGPT reads llms.txt files. What decides whether ChatGPT search can show your site is OAI-SearchBot access in robots.txt, so get that right first.
Not until someone has read it. An auto-generated file can list old pages or miss your main services, so we check it line by line against your live site.
It's part of our AI and LLM technical readiness audit, which is scoped and priced before we start, with no ongoing contract. Ongoing GEO comes inside the Growth Engine on a 12-month term.
