In short
Upfront or monthly? The real cost difference, when each option makes sense, what to check in any monthly plan and how the Growth Engine compares.
Pay upfront if you have the cash and want the lowest total cost. Pay monthly if keeping cash in the business matters more to you this year than the saving. With us, both routes buy exactly the same website: the monthly plan spreads the cost over 12 months with £0 upfront, and costs more over the year in return.
That's the short answer. The fuller one depends on three things: how much cash you have, what else that cash needs to do, and exactly what you're signing up to. Here's how to weigh them, using our own prices so you're looking at real numbers rather than examples.
What's the real difference in cost?
Our brochure website, a one-page site that shows your services and turns visitors into enquiries, is £1,500 + VAT upfront or £149 a month + VAT for 12 months. Our bespoke lead generation website, with up to 20 pages and advanced features and automation built in, is £4,500 + VAT upfront or £499 a month + VAT for 12 months.
Add up 12 payments and the monthly plan totals £1,788 + VAT on the brochure website and £5,988 + VAT on the lead generation website. Spreading the cost adds £288 + VAT on the smaller site and £1,488 + VAT on the larger one. That's the exact price of the flexibility, and it's the number to hold in mind as you read the rest.
Hosting sits alongside both. If you pay upfront, you pay the one-off price and then hosting each month. If you pay monthly, after the 12 months you only pay for hosting. Hosting costs £19.99 a month on the brochure site and £49.99 a month on the lead generation site, and SSL is included in both.
When does paying upfront make sense?
When the money is there and nothing more urgent needs it. Paying upfront is the cheapest way to buy the same website, and once it's paid, hosting is your only ongoing cost. There's no 12-month plan to keep track of and nothing extra sitting on your monthly outgoings.
It also suits a business planning a bigger push. If you've set money aside for a relaunch, paying for the site in one go leaves your monthly budget free for the things that bring visitors to it, such as Google Ads. A website nobody visits earns nothing, however it was paid for, so think about the full year rather than the build on its own.
When does paying monthly make more sense?
When cash in the bank is worth more to you than the saving. A new business has setup costs landing at once, and an established one has wages, stock and tax bills to meet. Paying monthly instead of the full price in one go keeps that money available for whatever comes up, and with £0 upfront, your new site can be live in 5 days on average without a large payment first.
Protecting cash flow is a concern well beyond websites. The British Business Bank's Small Business Finance Markets Report, published in March 2026, found that smaller businesses made "increased use of flexible forms of finance in 2025 to support cash flows." That report covers business finance rather than websites, but the reasoning carries over: spread a cost when the cash is needed elsewhere.
Monthly also lines the cost up with the work the site does. You pay for it month by month while it's live and taking enquiries, rather than all at once before it has taken a single one. How either route is treated in your accounts is a question for your accountant, and we'd always suggest asking before you decide.
What should you check before agreeing to a monthly website plan?
Monthly website deals don't all work the same way, so read the terms before you sign. Ask these questions of any provider, including us:
- How long is the term, and what's the total cost over it?
- What happens when the term ends: do the payments stop or carry on?
- Who owns the design and content, and from when?
- What does hosting cost, and is it on top of the monthly fee?
- What happens if you want to leave early?
Our answers to the first two are simple. The term is 12 months, nothing is due at the start, and after 12 months you only pay for hosting. Whoever you choose, get every answer in writing before you commit, because a low monthly figure tells you nothing on its own.
Can you get a website included with your marketing?
Yes, if you want the marketing too. With the DLR Growth Engine you pay £1,499 a month + VAT on a 12-month term, with no setup fees, and the website is part of the package: a free custom site worth £4,500. On top of the site, our team manages your Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO and GEO daily to win you qualified enquiries. You pay the ad platforms directly for your ad spend at whatever budget you choose, and the site is yours to keep when the 12 months are up.
That's a different decision from paying for a website monthly. You're buying a full lead generation service, and the website comes with it. If you were already planning to pay for ads and SEO alongside a new site, compare the Growth Engine with buying the website and the marketing separately. If you only need the website, one of the two plans above is the better fit.
Why is a DLR website cheaper than a traditional agency build?
Traditional agencies charge £10,000 to £20,000 for a bespoke site like our lead generation website. We use AI across research, copy, design and the build itself, and a person on our team reviews all of it. We've also signed the Responsible AI Use Campaign's 10 principles. That's how we keep the price well below the traditional model, whichever way you pay. Our web design page sets out everything that comes with every build.
The prices and both payment options are the same wherever you are in the UK. What changes is the competition you're up against, and in a crowded market a site that explains clearly what you do and makes it easy to get in touch has more rivals to beat. Our page on web design in London shows how we approach one of the busiest.
