In short
What a Dundee SEO agency should do, the red flags Google warns about, the questions to ask before you sign, and what SEO and GEO cost.
Choose an SEO agency in Dundee that shows you exactly what it will change on your website and Google Business Profile, reports on that work every month, and never promises you a number one ranking. Ask to see the plan before you sign, check it against Google's own advice on hiring help, and make sure the fee pays for work that brings in enquiries, not just a monthly report. If an agency can't explain its methods in plain English, keep looking.
What should an SEO agency actually do for your business?
Start with what you're paying for. Good SEO is a set of specific jobs, and you should be able to see each one being done.
The first job is technical. Your site has to load quickly, work properly on a phone and let Google read every page you want found. Broken links, missing page titles and slow pages all hold you back, and a good agency fixes them in the first weeks rather than leaving them on a to-do list.
The second is structure. Each service you sell needs its own page, and so does each area you want work from. If you take jobs in Broughty Ferry, Monifieth and across Angus, you need pages that speak to customers in those places, not one services page trying to cover everything. Work across the Tay in Fife earns a page of its own too.
Then comes your Google Business Profile, the listing that shows on the map. It needs the right categories, services, opening hours and photos, plus a steady flow of reviews that you reply to. Links from credible local and industry sites add the trust Google looks for. Last, you need a report that shows what changed, what moved and what happens next.
How does Google decide which Dundee businesses appear on the map?
If your customers search for a trade near them, your Business Profile is where the decision starts. Google's Business Profile help page on local ranking, which we checked in October 2026, names three factors behind local results: relevance, distance and prominence. "Prominence means how well-known a business is," Google explains, and that's the factor you can build on.
You can't move your premises, so distance is fixed. Relevance and prominence are where an agency earns its fee. Relevance comes from a complete profile and clear service pages. Prominence comes from reviews, which Google says can help your local ranking, and from a reputation that other credible sites back up. The same page states that you can't request or pay for a better local ranking, so treat anyone selling a shortcut with suspicion.
What are the red flags when you're comparing SEO companies in Dundee?
Google publishes its own advice on hiring help. Its Search Central page Do you need an SEO?, last updated in June 2026, puts the biggest warning plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." So the first red flag is an agency promising you the top spot. A guarantee is a sales line, not a sign of skill.
The same page warns about firms that are secretive or won't clearly explain what they intend to do, agencies that email you out of the blue, and anyone claiming a special relationship with Google. We'd add one more: no reporting. If you can't see which pages were changed, which links were earned and how your enquiries have moved, you can't tell whether the work is happening.
Google also advises giving an agency read access only to Search Console while it audits your site. That's a sensible rule, because nobody needs to change anything just to tell you what's wrong.
What should you ask an SEO agency before you sign?
You don't need to be an expert to interview one. These questions, drawn from Google's guidance and from what you need to run your business, separate the serious agencies quickly:
- Can you show me examples of your previous work?
- Do you follow Google Search Essentials, and will you share every change you make to my site?
- What results do you expect, over what timeframe, and how will you measure them?
- Who owns the website, the content and the Google Business Profile if we part ways?
- What's in the monthly fee, and what costs extra?
Listen for specifics. A good answer to the timeframe question names what gets fixed first and what you'll see in your reports. A weak answer talks about "visibility" and nothing else. Ownership matters too: your Business Profile and your domain should sit in your name, whoever you hire.
Why does GEO now belong in your SEO brief?
Search no longer ends at Google's list of links. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews all answer questions about local businesses, and they build those answers from websites they can read. Work to get your business into those answers is called GEO, generative engine optimisation.
Google's hiring page now covers this directly. It advises checking that any "AEO" or "GEO" service follows Google Search's official guidance on optimising for generative AI features. That's the right test. Good GEO rests on the same foundations as good SEO: clear pages that answer real questions, accurate business details everywhere you're listed, and a reputation other sites back up. Anyone selling it as a trick is a red flag.
We won't promise that any AI tool will recommend you, because nobody controls that. What we do is make your site and profile the clearest, most complete source on what you do and where you do it. You can read more on our GEO in Dundee page.
How much does an SEO agency in Dundee cost?
The price depends on scope: how many services and areas you cover, how much fixing your site needs, and how competitive your trade is locally. Comparing monthly fees on their own tells you very little, so ask what each fee buys.
We don't sell SEO as a standalone monthly service. Our SEO agency Dundee work runs daily inside the Growth Engine, at £1,499 a month + VAT on a 12-month term. That one fee covers SEO and GEO, Google Ads and Meta Ads management, and a free custom website worth £4,500 that you own after the term. Ad spend is billed separately. Search, ads and your website all work towards the same enquiries, instead of three suppliers each reporting on their own piece.
If you'd rather see where you stand first, start with an audit. Our SEO, local SEO and Google Business Profile audits show you what's holding your site back, with no ongoing contract.
Does your SEO agency need to be in Dundee?
No. What matters is that the agency understands who your customers are and where they are, and does the work it promises. We're remote-first, with Dundee as our registered address, and we work with you by video call, phone and email.
Local knowledge still counts when it shapes the plan. Whether you want more jobs in Broughty Ferry or want to push into Angus and Fife decides which pages get built first and which searches get targeted. That conversation happens on the first call, wherever you are.
Frequently asked questions
Can an SEO agency guarantee me first place on Google?
No. Google states that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, so treat an agency that promises one as a red flag.
How long does SEO take to work?
It depends on three things: your site's starting point, how competitive your trade is and how many areas you target. Technical fixes and Business Profile improvements come first, and your monthly reports show progress from there.
Do you offer SEO without the Growth Engine?
Not as a monthly service. You can book a standalone SEO, local SEO or Google Business Profile audit with no ongoing contract.
Which areas do you cover?
All of Dundee and Tayside, including Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Angus and Fife. We work with every client by video call, phone and email.
